An Austin institution, Sandy's Frozen Custard and Root Beer is the place for hamburgers, fries, milkshakes, root beer and frozen treats since 1947. Sandy's Hamburgers is a fixture on listings of Austin's top hamburger joints. The drive-through and walk-up window service (no indoor seating) hearkens back to the 1950s' hamburger stands that dotted the American roadside. Sandy's classic neon sign, topped with a swirled cone of frozen custard, beckons the hungry and the nostalgic to stop by for a burger or a cone.
